A Biergarten in Burlington? Ja!

I get so excited whenever I hear about new restaurants opening up in Burlington.  Especially when they represent a new and different dining choice for the area (as opposed to yet another Asian restaurant or pizza place).  So I was very excited this week to learn that the former Five Spice Cafe space on lower Church Street (south of Main) is being turned into Das Bierhaus VT.

According to their website, the new building will feature “a traditional German setting on the ground floor, a ski chalet interior on the second floor, and Burlington’s only biergarten on the roof.”  Let’s not kid ourselves, this is a college town: It will be the biergarten that will be the primary draw.  (At least, in the warmer seasons; I wonder what they’ll do in the winter?)

But I’m still looking forward to seeing what they offer for German cuisine.  Will it truly be just German cuisine, or will they break down and offer nachos and cheeseburgers for people who turn up their noses at the thought of sausages and sauerkraut?  I would actually be interested to see what German appetizers would look like.  Dare I hope they will offer wiener schnitzel and rouladin just like my Dad makes?

Start brushing up on your German, my friends. If you can only manage one phrase, it should be:  “Ich möchte ein halbes Liter Bier, bitte.”  You figure out what it means.
