If you ever make it to Vermont, you owe it to yourself to at least take a day trip to Stowe. Stowe is a picturesque little village with great shopping, dining, and outdoor activities. People think of Stowe in the winter, of course, for the skiing, but there’s a lot to do in the summer and fall, too. Stowe is a great spot for photography (an excellent activity for solo travelers). Within just a few miles, there must be hundreds of great photo opportunities.
I was in Stowe this past weekend for the foliage. So were a lot of tourists. The auto toll road (cost: $23 per vehicle) was busy with tourists, but I got there ahead of the pack, so was able to get some good photos before the noisy crowds interrupted the still of the forest and mountaintop. Here are some pictures I took. These should show you what you would be missing if you didn’t spend at least a day in Stowe while you’re in Vermont. Note: From the parking lot in front of the Visitors Center at the end of the toll road, take the walking path to the top of the mountain. The landscape is arctic tundra up there, very interesting and very cold (bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves).
