Shiny Travel Objects: June 20, 2010

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!  Quick housekeeping note:  There will be no Shiny Travel Objects on June 27 or July 4, but it will return on July 11.  Thanks.

In honor of my Dad, my first Shiny Travel Object is a great article from Dave and Deb at The Planet D, who were On the Riverboat with Princess Cruises in Alaska this week and blogged about some of the cool stuff they did, like the historical tour of the early settlers of Alaska.  All I could think while reading it was:  My parents would LOVE this. And yeah, I probably would, too.  But they would even more.

Matt Kepnes of Nomadic Matt wrote an article that elaborates on a subject I am touching upon briefly in a blog post about New York City this coming week:  In Losing the Wonder of Travel, Matt muses about how long-term, nomadic travel has caused him to lose the wonder of travel that first-timers have.  I’m not a nomadic traveler, but as I was writing my NYC article, I marveled at how different my travel experiences were when I was younger as opposed to today.  Is it possible to recapture the wonder?  Read Matt’s article to see what he has to say on the subject.

This next one is borderline travel-related and not for the claustrophobic:  VegasTripping ran a post called Help! I’m Trapped in an Elevator, with tips on what to do in case you are ever trapped in an elevator, as a couple of members of the VT community were this week.  The article includes an elapsed time video of a man who was trapped in an elevator for 41 hours (sped up, of course).  I’ve never felt claustrophobic in an elevator.  But the longer this video played, the more uncomfortable I became.  (Sending a message out to the elevator gods to never let me get trapped in an elevator.)

Speaking of videos, here’s a great one from Cailin O’Neil of Travel Yourself, who recorded her time in Newfoundland with Candice Walsh of Candice Does the World.  Loved the music, and they really looked like they were having a blast.  Technically this video came out over a week ago, but I just had time to watch it this week.  Sorry for the tardiness, ladies!  It was marvelous.

And from the woman who is teaching me nearly everything I know about Italy via her blog, Robin Locker posted about things to do Free (or Cheap) in Venice at My Melange.  I’m hoping to make it to Venice in the fall, and my budget is small, so free and cheap is where it’s at, as far as I’m concerned.  The more I travel, the more I realize I can have fun in a city without spending much or any money on the usual touristy things.  I like just walking around, looking at things, and taking photos.  Give me that and some food, and I’m happy.

Thanks so much for the shout out! I love that your parents would like the cruise. But believe me, the Alaskan Cruise has a lot of adrenaline in it as well:) Cheers!

Oh, for sure, it's just that they love the kind of rugged wilderness that Alaska has, and getting a firsthand look at the history/culture of Alaska would be right up their alley.
