Il Fornaio

Il Fornaio

Il Fornaio is an upscale Italian restaurant chain with locations in California, Washington, Virginia, Colorado, and New York, New York Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.  I had a solo dinner at the Las Vegas branch back in September.  I made an early reservation for around 5:30pm so I would have a choice of seating, and that worked out perfectly.  There were not many diners at that time of night, so I was able to select a table on the patio (which looks out onto the casino, including the Bar at Times Square). I was also able to get in and out of there in under 30 minutes, which was helpful for me, as I had a busy schedule that night.  I’m sure if one preferred to linger over their meal, that would not be a problem.

Patio dining here is almost as nice as real, outdoor patio dining, but with the benefits of being indoors.  Cute umbrellas simulate the outdoor dining experience, but tables are dressed up in white tablecloths and linen napkins.  It was a great spot for people-watching, though the nearby slot machines might make it a bit loud for conversation (not something I had to worry about as a solo diner).  My waiter was not overly friendly or chatty, but his service was flawless, and he smiled a lot.  No complaints there.

Bread and dipping oil

Since Il Fornaio got its start as a chain of Italian bakeries (and added the restaurants later), I tried the bread for which it is so famous. Okay, I also tried it because it came with dipping oil, which I normally love.  Not this time.  It was pretty bland.  I prefer my dipping oil with lots of garlic and spices.  The bread was good, but not the best I’ve had.

Lobster ravioli

My entree was the lobster ravioli, or “turtei con aragosta”. This ravioli is stuffed with fresh Maine lobster, leeks and Il Fornaio filone bread.  The pasta was noticeably al dente–and since I don’t usually notice that sort of thing, I figure it’s worth mention. Topping the ravioli were  diced tomato and shrimp and a lobster cream sauce, which was a bit drippy.  It was a delicious meal.  The portion size of the dish was perfect for me.  I managed to finish it all and left full, but not stuffed. As usual, I had no room for dessert.

Given the upscale ambience, the prices on the menu were reasonable.  I used a $25 MGM-Mirage rewards certificate to pay for the meal, so essentially only the tip came out of pocket.  Upshot:  While not the best Italian I’ve had, it was very good, and I would happily dine here again, solo or with others.  If I were with companions, I would probably choose to eat inside, away from the noise of the casino.  There is also bartop dining inside, if you’re dining solo and would appreciate a quieter atmosphere while at the same time having the chance to engage with other diners.
