So, you’re single and the holidays are coming. You have a few choices of what you can do.
- Work through the holidays and pretend they don’t exist.
- Celebrate alone. (Cue the sound of crickets chirping.)
- Drink yourself into a stupor and sleep through the New Year.
- Volunteer for a worthy organization that brings holiday cheer to the less fortunate.
- Spend the holidays with your family.
- Spend the holidays with friends.
- Travel solo to someplace great!
Three guesses as to which one I prefer, and the first two don’t count. (If you guessed #3–not bad, but you’re forgetting what website you’re on.) I’ll discuss some potential solo travel destinations later in the week, but first let’s discuss the second and third runners-up from the list. (My opinion only, of course.)
If you choose to volunteer for the less fortunate, might I recommend: a soup kitchen or food shelf; an organization that distributes toys to disadvantaged children; visiting the elderly in nursing homes; visiting children in hospitals. Or perhaps you belong to a religious organization that needs help with a service? Helping make someone else’s holiday better does miracles toward making your own better as well. It’s a good choice.
Spending the holidays with loved ones is, of course, most people’s preference. If you choose to go this traditional route and are traveling to visit family or friends, or you’re hosting family or friends from out of town, here are some helpful tips to make those visits easier from my friends at Tip Diva (and moi):
How to be a Courteous Host
Being a Considerate House Guest
Extra tip: If you’re flying to your destination, leave your gifts unwrapped until you arrive. This will help expedite security checks of your luggage at the airport.
No matter how you choose to spend your holidays, make sure it’s a choice that will make you happy. A stressful holiday is no good for anyone. Cheers!
