Summer in Burlington

Sunflower

Sunflower

Summer is my favorite season in Vermont. People plunk themselves down after work at umbrella tables at sidewalk cafes or find a spot near the lake until long after the sun sets. They line up at creemee stands, play frisbee in the park with their dogs, and bundle their kids into the car to go to see drive-in movies, marveling that the experience still exists.  Every weekend seems to bring a new parade or event or festival (jazz! beer! get it all here!), as we try to cram a year’s worth of living into just a few short months.  We walk and hike and bike and swim and hate the sweat of it and love the sweat of it, because it reminds us it isn’t winter.  We relish the smell of fresh cut grass wafting in through open windows, the tangy, charred smell of meat grilling in the neighbor’s yard, and the greasy sweetness of fried dough at the county fair.  We sit on porches and in front of screened windows at night, listening to frogs and crickets and passing cars and inhaling the cool, green, earthy air. If only it were like this all year long.

Love the sunflower picture, they're such a pretty flower. Summer is great season, but it is much too short. I can't believe there's a drive-in movie theater in Burlington. Last (and only time actually) I went to a drive-in movie I was about 5. It was The Jetsons Movie/Back To The Future 3 double feature.

Couldn't agree more. Of course, you just reminded me that summer is far from endless in Vermont – which just makes me want to go out there and live it up even harder before the snows come.

    I posted a similar gushy blog/vid awhile back…

Well, it's not right in Burlington, it's just outside of Burlington in Colchester. Close enough to get to easily, though.

GREAT video, Nathan! I love it. You captured the Waterfront vibe perfectly. I think we appreciate these days more because we know they're so fleeting.

Thanks, Shannon. Summer is the best time of year to visit Vermont, in my opinion. Fall is nice too.

I've always loved winters and fall in Vermont, so fun to see the summer pics. You really capture the summer mood!

We're in France and Spain this summer, but in some ways that wonderful summer feel is the same…the water, the sailboats, canoes, sun, and sunflowers. ;) I love a never ending summer! ;)

I think I need to move somewhere where it's summer year-round, because I am done with Vermont winters. Spain and France sound lovely. Thanks for stopping by, Jeanne!

Ha! Well, one way to have summer or spring all year long is just follow the weather ( that is what we do) or winter somewhere warm. ;)

Oh believe me, as soon as I can figure out a way to make money in a location-independent way, I'm all over that plan!

Vermont is gorgeous in the spring–last year I spent the Memorial Day weekend (solo) camping in the Manchester Valley at Emerald Lake and fell in love. Great antiquing too. I hope to make another trip in the fall when the leaves are turning…

Yeah, pretty much every season except winter is nice here. I know there are a lot of winter fans out there; I'm just not one of them. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
