Valentine’s Day Ideas for the Single Traveler

Here it is, the obligatory holiday-themed blog post (even if the “holiday” is a totally commercial event manufactured by retailers and greeting card companies).  What does Valentine’s Day have to do with solo travel, you ask?  Well, if you’re single and unattached for Valentine’s Day this year, it’s the perfect excuse to lavish some love on the number one person in your life:  You.  That’s right, YOU.  Why don’t you take the money that you would have had to spend on [a card and flowers and candy and an expensive dinner and a movie and jewelry and hot lingerie for your SO] and use it instead to spoil yourself a little with a weekend away?  What’s very convenient about this Valentine’s Day is that it happens to fall on a 3 day U.S. holiday weekend this year (President’s Day).  Here are some solo trip ideas to get you started.

  • Pamper yourself. Book yourself a spa weekend at a nice hotel or resort.  Order a decadent dinner from room service (nothing but the best for you), light some candles and cozy up with a favorite book or movie.
  • Make it a learning weekend.  Go somewhere where you can soak up some knowledge on a topic that interests you.
  • Follow your passion for a weekend of skiing, golf, scuba diving or whatever it is that makes you happy.
  • Be a kid again: Go to a theme park and ride all the rides the way you did when you were a kid.
  • Laugh until it hurts.  If you don’t live in a city with a great comedy club, find one that does and go prepared to laugh until your sides hurt.
  • Party like a rock star in Las Vegas.
  • Meet some new friends. Take a singles cruise.
  • Do something that pushes you outside your comfort zone. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of empowerment that comes from accomplishing something new.
